The seismic wavefield is measured by the geophones or hydrophones. Their output is electrical signals. Geophones are used to monitor velocity, which consists of a magnetic core, surrounded by an electric coil where the magnetic core is attached to the housing and moves with it using delicate leaf springs; the coil is attached to the housing.  The housing moves but the coil tends to stay stationary as the ground vibrates. Movement of the magnet within the coil induces an electrical current that’s calibrated to the velocity of vibration. Geophones can only monitor frequencies above their natural frequency, up to a specified spurious frequency.
